Many
authentic Scottish dances are notoriously complicated and most non-Scots
find them difficult to dance. The
calling instructions are also almost impossible to relay to beginners
during a dance. When these dances are held in Scotland, it is usually the
case that most or all of the participants have been brought up dancing
these dances at school etc and so they will be second nature to them.
|
|
|
The
same obviously does not apply in South East England however, and for this
reason we prefer to call what we do a “ceilidh with a Scottish
flavour” which means that we will be doing a mixture of the simpler
Scottish dances (for example
Strip the Willow, Dashing White Sergeant, Gay Gordons etc) and some Irish,
English and American dances from our repertoire.
Listening music played when people are not dancing will include
many Scottish tunes. |
|
Dances
like Eightsome Reel, Hamilton
House, Duke of Perth are best left out as they are suited to experienced
Scottish dancers. We would of
course be happy to play music only for any of these complicated dances
provided there are enough experienced dancers present. |
